Schwartz speaks at Peace Instititute; highlights Rongelapese voices

Nuclear Conf JAS 01

Dr. Jessica A. Schwartz speaks at the U.S. Institute of Peace in Washington, DC.

MEI Co-Founder Jessica A. Schwartz spoke at the U.S. Institute OF Peace on the human dimensions of the use of nuclear weapons. The afternoon conference was attended by officials from the Dept. of Energy, Dept. of Defense, and Dept. of State, and was held in conjunction with United Nations International Day Against Nuclear Testing on Sept. 15, 2014.

Schwartz discussed the physical and psychological trauma U.S. nuclear testing (1946-1958) had on the Marshallese people, and highlighted “radiation” songs written as laments and in protest by Rongelapese women, including Lijon, with whom Dr. Schwartz had spent time in the R.M.I from 2008-2010.

The event was also sponsored by the Embassy of Kazakhstan, Arms Control Association, and Green Global.
